Hope For Creation Conference 2024: May 29-June 1

The 2024 Hope For Creation conference will join with the EXPO '74 50th anniversary by hosting a panel discussion on Spirituality and Environmental Care on May 29 at 7:00pm at St. John’s Cathedral, 127 E 12th Avenue. This keynote session is a joint offering of the Environmental Stewardship and Tribal Culture pillars of EXPO.

Leaders from five Spiritual traditions will offer their thoughts on creation care and respond to questions from the audience: Page Checketts from the Mormon Environmental Stewardship Alliance; Marqus Cole from Georgia Interfaith Power and Light; Yoshi Silverstein from Matsui collective; Barry Moses from the Spokane Tribe; and Melanie Mullen from the National Episcopal Church. The session will be moderated by Warren Seyler from the Spokane Tribe and John Wallingford, St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral.

Supplementing this main presentation will be a Speaker’s coffee reception on May 30 at 9:30am at St John’s. Also on May 30, at 11:30am at Temple Beth Shalom, speakers will join Adam Bartholomew from Gonzaga University for a discussion on the meaning of Jubilee- the 50th year, in the context of celebrating EXPO. In the afternoon of May 30 at Riverfront Park there will be a joint presentation on Environment in Body by Yoshi Silverstein and Erin Heyamoto from Eclipse yoga. This session will be followed immediately by the annual Healing of the Earth Vigil, organized by the Faith Leaders and Leaders of Conscience.  At 7:00pm Thursday evening there will be a discussion of priorities of Interfaith Power and Light led by two of the guest speakers, Marqus Cole and Melanie Mullen, joined by executive Director of Washington State Interfaith Power and Light, AC Churchill.

On Friday May 31 there will be a hike led by Inland Northwest Lands Conservancy docent Andi Chatburn up Iller Creek so the visitors can experience the joy of Spokane’s natural environment. The public is welcome to join this event, a physical and spiritual connection to the earth. Similarly, on Saturday June 1, Andi Chatburn will lead a walk at the James T. Slavin Conservation area, an excellent teaching experience on the Lake Missoula floods.

There will be a special environmental worship service at St. John’s Cathedral on Friday evening June 1 at 5:30pm with Marqus Cole preaching. Finally, Mr. Cole will preach Sunday June 2 at Immanuel Spokane, Rev. Mullen will preach Sunday June 2 at St. John’s Cathedral. These events are all open to the public.
