Activities for Youth

Servers (Acolytes)

4th through 12th-graders are encouraged to serve as acolytes at the Sunday morning services, where they receive training and gain an understanding of the rich heritage of the Liturgy while enjoying the special privilege of serving at the altar. Servers also enjoy special social events and the camaraderie of working together to perform this special ministry. They are greatly relied upon in presentation of the liturgy.

Youth Group

Youth Group meets every Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. All youth in grades 7th – 12th are invited to attend. During our time together we enjoy games, dinner, fellowship and spiritual reflection. Throughout the seasons of Advent and Lent the youth group works on outreach projects. They make gifts for shut-ins, work at the food bank, and serve dinner at shelters.

Youth Group Retreats

The youth group holds three retreats a year; one in the fall, one in the spring, and one in the summer. During the retreats the youth spend time with one another engaged in trust and community building exercises. They develop closer relationships with one another as a result of these experiences.

Teens Encountering Christ – January 18, 19 & 20

Teens Encountering Christ is a retreat weekend of spiritual journey for youth in 9th through 12th grades. The TEC experience is an entire weekend for youth and led by youth. TEC is modeled on a Cursillo spiritual renewal experience. During the weekend there are a series of ten youth led talks combined with worship that lead the youth through the Ash Wednesay, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and Pentecost experience.

The young people who attend will experience friendships, enjoy fun
Activities and come alive to their own spirituality. Teens Encountering Christ helps to build young people up spiritually. Through this experience they take responsibility for their faith life. It also prepares our youth to be leaders as the expectation is that after experiencing a TEC a youth will then take on leadership roles in subsequent TEC's. For more information about TEC please call Michelle Klippert at St. John's Cathedral 509-838-4277.

30 Hour Famine

The Cathedral hosts the 30 Hour Famine on all odd numbered years. All youth in 7th through 12th grades are invited to attend. During the retreat from Friday evening to Saturday evening the youth fast from food while filling their time with service projects that benefit the Spokane community. The youth will be contacting friends and family before the famine starts to pledge money for every hour that they are fasting. All of this money will go towards helping people who suffer from hunger. Everyday 29,000 people die from hunger throughout the world. The next famine will be held in February of 2009.
